My next-door neighbours are faithful, kind-hearted, generous Muslims who left their native land for a better life in Canada. They had a rich, affluent life in Afghanistan until extremists invaded their home, threatened their 6 children and robbed them of all they had. I regularly see their father in prayer and their loving mother visits me almost daily to bring our family food she has made. We dont share the same language but mutual respect and love is easy to understand. This week representatives of major Canadian Muslim groups gathered to reiterate their denunciation of terrorism in the name of Islam, even as fear of harassment and violence grows in the Muslim-Canadian community. “Our message to anyone who believes in violent extremist ideologies is that you have nothing to do with Islam,” said Ihsaan Gardee, the executive director of the National Council of Canadian Muslims. “You have nothing to do with the noble principles of our faith, which categorically condemn the taking of innocent life.” I hope that as Canadians we can truly stand on guard side-by-side with one another, regardless of our differing political views or religious beliefs. We must reach out to those who are most vulnerable, share more of what we have, and petition for the fundamental freedoms of others around the world.
