My next stop was Chiang Rai, more than 800 km from Bangkok. I took the bus here, and I meet three people there. 2 Aussies, of which one is named Tyron as well ;) the other one, Tom, is joining me for Cambodia. After arriving in chiang rai, we went to the night market here. Its not as crowded as chiang Mai, and they dont sell the same crap everywhere. (Still a lot of useless stuff though ;) but the food is awesome and a different band is playing at the food court every night. The next day I went exploring chiang rai. It doesnt have much to offer for tourists though.. BUT, it has the white temple. Its giant artwork that happens to be a Buddhist temple as well. Its not finished yet, you can still see people drawing on the walls, and one if the buildings was still under construction. Unfortunately its a bit outside of the town so we needed a tuk tuk driver to get there who charged way to much but it was worth it. Today I rented a scooter and went the 60 km to the golden triangle. Its the place where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet. It used to be the most important production place of opium in the world, but Thailand and Laos are now patrolling the borders, so only Myanmar is left for opium. The nature up there is amazing you cant really see that on the pictures. There is an island called don sao, that is technically Laos, but you dont need a visa to get in. But the boat drivers wanted 400 bath to Cross the Mekong, and that was way to much so we didnt go, and as I didnt take my passport I could cross into actual Laos, but theres nothing in this part of Laos anyway. After seeing another big Buddha at the actual golden triangle (the entire region is called so, but the actual place is where you can see all three countries) we went further north to Mae Sai, the most northern point in Thailand. We had lunch here, and during lunch I noticed that is was kind of a big mistake not putting on sunscreen today... Result, bad sunburn in November ;) Anyway, Im flying back to Bangkok tmr, and Im taking the bus to Angkor wat in Cambodia on Thursday.
