My office just sent out the following announcement. Please "Share" it with your friends. "Jefferson Parish is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Karen currently located in the southern Gulf of Mexico near the Yucatan Peninsula. At this time, National Weather Service forecasters expect T.S. Karen to make landfall east of the Louisiana Gulf Coast between the Alabama coast and Florida panhandle. The National Weather Service anticipates the storm may strengthen briefly to a lower-level Category 1 hurricane while southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. However, due to interactions with a strong cold front and wind shear aloft, expectations are Karen will weaken back to tropical storm levels prior to landfall. Strongest impacts will be east of the center. At this time, impact to Jefferson Parish, particularly to lower Jefferson Parish, may include: · Possible storm surge 1’-2’ above normal in areas outside of the levee protection system to include Grand Isle, Lafitte, Crown Point, and Barataria. · Tides 2’-4’ in the Tropical Storm Watch area and 4’-6’ in the Hurricane Watch area, highest on East and Southeast facing shores. · Potential for at least 2-4 inches of rain Friday night through Saturday night. · Potential for Tropical Storm winds or gusts, 35-45 mph winds over land and Lake Pontchartrain. Jefferson Parish strongly encourages all citizens to take the necessary steps now to prepare your families, homes, and property in the event Jefferson Parish is impacted by this or any weather event. Residents should pay close attention to news reports for weather updates. Citizens are asked to help reduce the chance of street flooding by clearing debris from their streets and drains around their property; such debris impedes water flow into the drainage system. Parish Ordinance Section 36-188 prohibits motorists from traveling on flooded streets, which may increase the possibility of structural flooding due to wake action caused by moving vehicles. Jefferson Parish Public Works crews will be available to respond as needed. All pump stations requiring manning will be fully staffed for the duration until the threat of this weather event is over.
