My one bit of political soapboxing for election day: go vote no - TopicsExpress

My one bit of political soapboxing for election day: go vote no on LR-126, which is a proposed change to eliminate late voter registration and voting-day voter registration in Montana. It should be clear to everyone why this change to law is being proposed: those who are not registered are most likely to be young voters who have never voted before. Im pretty sure this included me, many years back, when I decided on election day that I should finally go vote for the first time. The voter information packet alludes to minimal delays and a timely fashion. In addition, the argument FOR this change posits that elections are complicated affairs, which is another way of saying look, you wouldnt understand, but believe us that things will go to hell if we dont make this change. For clarity, the push for this comes from the Republican party, who understands clearly that first-time younger voters will likely not back their conservative causes or their backing of large industry corporations at the expense of individual rights. (Its not that the Democratic party is perfect, its just that theyre less entirely rapacious about gutting the benefits of the common citizenry in favor of granting huge boons to corporate and plutocratic entities.) Anyhow, theres another reason to vote, and it is this: if you complain about how bad things are and I ask you if youve voted and you say no, then Im going to tell you that you can shut the hell up. It is exactly this kind of lethargy that continues to leave the bipartisan system in place. Only if enough people actually believe that things can be different will we be able to vote in third party candidates who arent beholden to the historic power structure. Granted, theyre likely to be beholden to a whole new power structure, but at least itd be a chance at something different. So, please, take a half hour out of your incredibly important random Tuesday schedule and hie thine ass down to the polls. The entrenched power brokers will be pleased if you do nothing but grumble about how rigged it is and stay home.
