My opinion on the Revel and Atlantic City situation. 1. THE BUSINESS CULTURE: Atlantic City has not changed their culture in 20 years. (other than the Borgata) They do not understand the customer service business. They do not appreciate the customer...they have thrived and survived because they were the only game in town for 3 decades...and simply could not change their culture with the times. 2. COMPETITION: Sadly, experts claim that there is over saturation in the market and the only way to survive is to shut some of those casinos down. Then (the thought process is) we can take the same number of visitors and divide it among a smaller number of competitors and the market will be strong again. I say that is completely WRONG. While some closure needed to happen (The Plaza for example). The less number of competitors makes Atlantic City less attractive as a destination location. The choices in places to stay, gamble, eat, shows, etc...is no longer there and (in my opinion) the total number of visitors will continue to decline. Who wants to walk past 3 empty buildings to get to the next one. What is going to happen with crime with so many people now out of work? Tax revenue for the city is projected to drop by $75 million...so what happens to the police force, the sanitation crews? What about the ancillary effects? The pizza shop on Pacific ave between Revel and Showboat? Who is ordering pizza there now? The liquor store, the 7-11, the hot dog vendor. There was a missed opportunity (which i believe Donald Trump had at one time) which was lets build up everything around the casino...build up the airport, add the shopping, get rid of the crime, lets get this back to the beautiful city it once was. Sadly, that never happened. I watched Resorts being built in the late 70s, vacationed every summer as a child down there, lived in Brigantine for 4 years...and to watch it decline like this is so sad...especially when i feel like they had a great opportunity to reinvest in the city (the casinos) 20 years ago when profits were big. I learned a very simple and powerful business lesson many years ago. if you do not change, you will die and sadly, that is what has happened to Atlantic City :(
