My parents John and Bertha Pohlmann will be on this flight. Your letters will be appreciated. (The following message is attached in a printable letter format.) Dear Family/Friend of an Honor Flight Veteran, On Tuesday, September 10, 2013 the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight will depart The Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, taking approximately 90 Veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials built in their honor. This is a trip of a lifetime for most of these brave Vets. It is a very emotional day for these energetic Veterans who sacrificed so much for the freedom and liberty of our country. Our goal is to make this a very memorable and personal experience for each of them. We can only do this with the help of the community, family and friends and are asking you to express your thoughts and appreciation to your Veteran with our “Letters to Veterans Project.” Unbeknownst to the Veterans, there will be a “Mail Call” during the flight home where they will receive letters written especially for them by family, friends, school children and members of the community. Many tears have been witnessed on the plane when the Veterans receive their packets and see that people have taken the time to write them a personal letter. For many of these Veterans, the letters become a treasured keepsake. You are the designated point of contact to pass this request on to family and friends of your Veteran. Guidelines for the letters are below: A. Address the letter to your Veteran personally, setting forth your thanks and appreciation for their service and how they have touched your lives. B. Letters and emails need to be received by us one week prior to the flight if at all possible. (We will do our best to include letters arriving after that date or they will be forwarded to the Veteran after the flight but it most helpful if you can meet the deadline.) People can also send them directly to the Veteran after the flight if they miss the flight deadline. Do not send prior to the flight since we want this to be a surprise to the Veteran. There are three ways to get the letters to us by Tuesday, September 3rd. 1) Mail to: (Preferred Method) Eastern Iowa Honor Flight Attn: Letters for Veterans P.O. Box 502 Hiawatha, IA 52233 VERY IMPORTANT! After addressing your letter, please write the name of the Veteran on the backside of your envelope so it is delivered to the proper Veteran. 2) Letters may also be brought to Orientation and placed in our “disguised mailbox.” 3) Letters can be emailed to eihfletterstovets@gmail as a written message or as an attachment. Please include your Veteran’s name on the subject line. Email any questions to eihfletterstovets@gmail; include the Veteran’s name, your name and preferred contact phone number or you may call 1-855-344-3435 and leave a message for the Letters to Veterans Coordinator. Your call will be returned ASAP. The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight would also like to invite you to the “Welcome Home Celebration” that will take place upon the Honor Flight’s return to Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, September 10, 2013! The flight will arrive at The Eastern Iowa Airport at approximately 10:30 pm. Please join in the festivities as the Veterans enter the terminal. We hope to provide a welcome home that many of them never received after returning from war. Parking will be free if you pick up a ticket inside the airport terminal at the information kiosk. You can also visit our website at eihonorflight.org for more information. All the best, Anita Munson Chief of Staff Eastern Iowa Honor Flight
