My parents lived less than 30 miles away from Ferguson, MO., just across the river in Illinois, when I was born. It wasnt until I got to high school age that I began to realize they were both quite prejudiced. I give them much credit for knowing it would have been wrong to pass those beliefs on to me, and for intentionally raising me to believe in the fine words of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I am proud that my late ex-wife and I raised our four children to be free from prejudice, to be dismayed when they see and hear it, and to speak and act out against it. Bigotry and intolerance are learned traits, they are not intrinsic to humans, and are usually taught and conditioned into people when they are children. The only real way to rid our society of these kinds of ignorant and fear based thinking is to as Mr. Nash said Teach Our Children Well. I recognize the absolute right (at least in this country) that everyone has to think, feel and say whatever they wish, but that doesnt mean we shouldnt hold all people accountable for their actions.
