My personal update from Oil Sistas in Uganda last week: No - TopicsExpress

My personal update from Oil Sistas in Uganda last week: No pictures for today. Only words. Our team of 17 walked into a medical care clinic to an entire community of over 300 people cheering us, waiting to be cared for and loved... By just about anyone who would do it. I saw over 70 pregnant women for prenatal care within our half of a day there. Ill never complain again about how busy my days at the office are! Many of these women were at their first prenatal visit ever, even if it was baby number 9. Most of them had never heard their babys heart beat before. Most women didnt know their due date. We had to share 1 blood pressure cuff that belonged to the entire clinic. Someone would run it back and forth upstairs and downstairs. Only one scale. No measuring tape. One Doppler. One pen. The needs are so great. These mamas didnt have matching shoes, they had holes in their clothes. Some of them waited 3 and 4 hours to be seen. Yet somehow, not one woman was unhealthy or overweight. Completely fit, strong, and measuring perfect. Babies in proper position because of all the squatting and walking they do. No rampant pre-E or gestational diabetes. 2 out of the 70 I saw had had a c-section. It totally confirmed for me what I already know to be true: the US with its fancy tools and strict regulations do not, in fact, have better birth outcomes than in third world countries. Maybe we could learn something from this culture. And then of course we rubbed oils on their feet and prayed for them and their babies. What a crazy Uganda day.
