My quick review of the houses from tonight (from subjectively best to worst). Dollhouse of the Damned- 10/10 Creepy as hell, totally messed, and it made me feel uncomfortable. Beautiful sets and costumes, great story. All around house of the year. Halloween- 8.5/10 Damn good house. The best literal interpretation of actually living the movie. Although there tended to be too many Michaels at once that ruined the illusion and some repetitive sets, scared and atmosphere were on-point. From Dusk Till Dawn- 8/10 Surprise hit this year for me. Big and beautiful sets, the clearest story of all the houses and some really cool effects, all without being hindered by its clichéd theme. Giggles and Gore Inc.- 7.5/10 This one was a lot of fun with good scare actors and gore galore, but unfortunately the coolest aspects from the story (via the HHN website) seemed to be missing. Still, some good scare tactics and guest triggers along with a lot of talent make this a good house. Roanoke: Cannibal Colony- 7/10 Once again the sets are huge, but the actors were lacking in this one (either mentally or literally) but the story was damn good with some great set pieces. Also hindered by some bad costuming, which leads a certain character to look like a bad rip - off titan. Alien Vs. Predator- 6/10 Easily has the potential to be the best house of the entire event based off the lights-on tour. But unfortunately, on my run through, I saw neither alien or predator (hopefully because of a cast change) and the incredibly detailed sets, costumes and sound design couldnt make up for the fact that good atmosphere cant make a house alone. Walking Dead: End of the Line- 6/10 Meh. That sums up this franchises life at HHN. Granted, this year is the best; the house is plenty long and features a plethora of scareactors. However most of them tend to be boring, generic and uninteresting characters played by boring actors. Also, the sets have plenty of stuff in them to tell a story, theyre detailed but just not enough and everything comes off as bland. The Terminus scene was cool, though. Dracula: Untold- 2/10 What is this shit Universal? DCI (no offense) has a better story and less inconsistencies than this maze. Plus, no actors and generally dark and sets lacking detail make this a very sub-par house. It feels blocky and flat, and therefore boring. Overall- 7.5/10 This year shows a lot of potential. Granted, these are my personal experiences and this was only opening weekend. Im sure things will change and improve over time, and the event really is wonderful and I hope nothing here diseases anyone from going. The streets are much better than the past, and it seems like HHN is finally back on track.
