My recent excursion into the excellent Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game has gotten me on a Star Wars kick as of late. I was probably due, having just re-watched the films and their Family Guy counterparts in January when I was sick. Now, Star Wars was never my favorite thing. Batman is my favorite thing. But Star Wars is high on my list of amazing things from my youth, along with Indiana Jones and Peanuts and remains high on my list of things that inspire me creatively along with The Lord of the Rings and Star Trek. On this most recent Star Wars kick I was seeking out new material. The documentary film The People vs George Lucas was highly recommended, so I watched it this afternoon on Netflix. Many people have told me if you want to see just how bad Lucas is watch this film. This film did not make me hate Lucas. Not at all. This film made me hate nerd culture. Im a lifelong nerd and I say that. The level of self entitlement shown in this film is flabbergasting. That is not to defend or condemn anything Lucas has done. I imagine everyone has their own opinions and they are entitled to them. But the cries of You ruined my childhood and You didnt do it the way I want are both sickening and seemingly unique to nerd culture. Being a creative person myself, it sort of makes me disgusted that I would ever endeavor to try and release something creative publicly. And Ill throw this out there just to amaze everyone. I dont care if Han shot first. Not one bit. It doesnt change one thing about the movies for me.
