My respect for this man grows. One man, no matter how great, cannot greatly change the course of so massive a human institution as the Catholic Church, without help -- the cooperation of the rest of the church hierarchy and the enthusiastic support of the faithful. Yet without this kind of leadership there is little hope. Dave Graeber in 5000 Years of Debt gets into this when he explores the transformation of economies from communal to commercial. This book is far more interesting than the title suggests. It is a measure of the depth of Pope Francis understanding of human society that he makes this statement, rather than the hackneyed and inaccurate pursuit of money is the root of all evil, though the central idea is related.
