My review of Big Hero 6: Big Hero 6 is Big Family Fun! by - TopicsExpress

My review of Big Hero 6: Big Hero 6 is Big Family Fun! by Ryan Mackett It was only a matter of time before Disney released an animated feature based off of a Marvel Comics property since acquiring Marvel in 2009. For the first Marvel-based, Disney-produced animated feature, Disney interestingly decided to adapt a property even more obscure than the Guardians of the Galaxy: Big Hero 6. Granted, many changes were made to the team’s origins, various plot points and characters’ superpowers; the film also has no connection to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe despite being based on a Marvel comic book. The film follows brilliant 14-year-old robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada and his robot companion Baymax, along with a group of other science students as they try to discover the identity of a new villain. The film takes place in San Fransokyo, an extremely imaginative hybrid of San Francisco and Tokyo. Visually the city reminded me of a more cheerful and clean Blade Runner-type world. The quality of the animation is of the highest calibre, which is to be expected of a Disney Animation Studios production. After all, these are the same filmmakers behind Frozen, Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph. While not as refined and near-perfect as a typical Pixar production, Big Hero 6 is undoubtedly one of the best animated features to come along in a while. I enjoyed it almost as much as this year’s How to Train Your Dragon 2. The film wasn’t perfect, though. The supporting characters were not as well-developed as they could have been, especially after the incredible introductions each one of them receives. The themes of the movie were powerful, however the movie didn’t hit home the way Wall-E, Up or The Incredibles did. Speaking of which, Big Hero 6 really made me yearn for an Incredibles sequel. Another thing that really impressed me with this film however is that it was very family friendly. Although there were some parts that may be a bit intense for really young children, overall the film was a nice departure from the serious, dark and gritty atmosphere most comic book movies are going for. Big Hero 6 was good family fun, plain and simple. Big Hero 6 is an exciting taste of what future Marvel-inspired animated films could be. Hopefully Disney will allow their Pixar branch a crack at some of these characters as well. I would love to see what The Incredibles team would do with pre-established characters such as Spider-Man, the X-Men or The Avengers. If Big Hero 6 is a sign of the things to come from Disney, I am very excited.
