My review of Wild: I give it 3.25 stars out of 4. Its not as good as Cheryl Strayeds book, likely because in 2 hours, its impossible to flesh out the relationships in the backstory, though the front story (the hiking) is done extremely well. It is completely worth seeing, one of the better movies this year (though this year was sparse for worthy flicks). Witherspoons acting is exceptional. Wild (the movie) only fails in that it tries to cover too much ground in the past tense story line, never making me completely latch on to the deep connection she had with her mother or allowing me to understand the peripheral ones explored between her brother and ex-husband. It scratches the surface, which makes her emotional struggles on the trail seem exaggerated, like an acquaintance we know is hurting, but who hasnt told us whats wrong. Again, still very much worth seeing, especially if you loved the book...where the backstory is well rendered.
