My second job was Conflict Resolution Resource Teacher at an elementary school in my home town, which basically meant I was the dean. I noticed a trend; our children were out of line more than they should have been. The entire staff was local people, from the community, like me. When I would call the homes to tell parents about an incident and the consequence, the first thing they would ask was usually What about the other kid? or What about the teacher? Lots of people openly defied punishment. They felt I was too strict. One lady asked me if I knew what it meant to be Black. I later found out that everyone was under the impression that I was from Africa. Today, I see what has become of the community and I wonder what happened to other teachers who have been around for twenty years or more. Did we all see the same things emerging in Atlanta, Dallas, Brooklyn, Chicago and Los Angeles? How long have we been losing ground? Why has there been no legitimate movement to address the real problems?
