My sister and I realized today that Mom must be in heaven laughing at us right now! Throughout the last few years of Dementia, Mom tried very hard to assert her independence, even though it was to her detriment. She may not have remembered what you told her 5 minutes earlier, but she sure knew when you were not looking. And as soon as she was sure you were not watching her or if you left the room, she was on the move to see what she could get into. We had to tie chimes to her walker so we would know she was on the move. So last night, after everyone had gone home and only my sister and I were there, we noted that her breathing was becoming labored again. So I administered the lowest dose of morphine. And my sister and I left the room momentarily. And while our back was turned, Mom made one last escape, stepping over the threshold from this earth into heaven.
