My sister in law thinks her daughter is reacting to food chemicals - TopicsExpress

My sister in law thinks her daughter is reacting to food chemicals and asked for a simplified Feingold. Heres what I told her: First, if you have a few minutes, poke around on this site. Very informative. 100daysofrealfood/ Before I overwhelm you with the donts, Ill tell you the dos. For snacks: Saltines are good. Any chips where the ingredients are corn/potatoes, oil, salt (Fritos, ruffles, Lays, plain Pringles, tortilla chips). Natural cheetoes: not baked, but Natural. Bananas, pears and melons. Carrots, celery & hummus. Organic microwave popcorn. We only buy Hormel natural sandwich meat. And its a great excuse to buy an ice cream machine :) the only natural ice creams are expensive like Haagen Dazs or Ben & Jerry. All Blue Bell is artificial, which breaks my heart. The donts: Read packages like a fiend. Its a pain at first but then you know what to buy and its no big deal. Do the great grandma rule: if your great grandma wouldnt recognize it, dont buy it. Go thru your pantry and ditch: * If it says red 40, blue lake, yellow 5, etc, any color. Also caramel color. Mac & cheese has dye unless its Annies or other organic. And most pickles, relish etc. * look for the initials TBHQ, BHT, or BHA. These are preservatives that affect kids the same way. Found most often in cereal and crackers and candy, like Reeses. * anything that says artificial flavor or vanillin. Ice cream, candy, chocolate, packaged cookies, anything fruity like juice or Popsicles, anything cheesy, and salad dressings are some of the worst. * cut out all berries, grapes, raisins and apples for a month or so. All of these are triggers in lots of kids. Lots of other fruits do too but those are the main ones. (Ike cannot have apples). Once you cut them out you can add them back to test them one by one and see if it makes them crazy. A lot of kids react to grapes. * MSG. MSG makes Ike batty and its in most snack foods unless they are organic, including goldfish :( MSG tricks your brain into thinking it is still hungry so you CRAVE goldfish etc. Its nasty stuff. Kills brain cells. Problem is that they rarely call it MSG, they call it a bunch of names so you wont know because everybody knows MSG is bad. Usually its the word yeast or natural flavoring but here are some other names it hides under: Glutamic acid (E 620)2 Glutamate (E 620) Monosodium glutamate (E 621) Monopotassium glutamate (E 622) Calcium glutamate (E 623) Monoammonium glutamate (E 624) Magnesium glutamate (E 625) Natrium glutamate Anything “hydrolyzed” Any “hydrolyzed protein” Calcium caseinate, Sodium caseinate Yeast extract, Torula yeast Yeast food, Yeast nutrient Autolyzed yeast Gelatin Textured protein Whey protein Whey protein concentrate Whey protein isolate Soy protein Soy protein concentrate Soy protein isolate Anything “protein” Anything “protein fortified” Soy sauce Soy sauce extract Anything “enzyme modified” Anything containing “enzymes” Anything “fermented” Anything containing “protease” Vetsin Ajinomoto Umami And probably: Carrageenan (E 407) Bouillon and broth Stock Any “flavors” or “flavoring” Natural flavor Maltodextrin Oligodextrin Citric acid, Citrate (E 330) Anything “ultra-pasteurized” Barley malt Malted barley Brewer’s yeast Pectin (E 440) Malt extract Seasonings I think thats enough for now. Just eat simple real food. Real butter. Whole milk. Make cookies (with Costco fair trade natural chocolate chips) instead of buying.
