My sister set up a camp for children with Hemiplegia. She has run it for years, on her own time at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital. She is the first in the country to run a constraint therapy camp specifically for children. She does this for 2 weeks in the summer, working at least 8 hours a day at camp and then goes to work at the hospital because she isnt given time off to do this. The camp has become famous. A couple of years ago a therapist in Australia came to observe so he could do the same thing there. The camp is FREE to students who meet qualifications. Its based on age, diagnosis, instate/out of state, and the number of students slots available, etc. The camp is in great demand but requires volunteer pts and ots for a one on one experience for the campers. Student OTs and PTs as well as working professionals all volunteer their time. Holly has been recognized by receiving many awards for this project and how successful it has become. I say all of this because today I heard that some parents who are mad their children didnt make it into camp this summer are posting nasty, negative, and ignorant remarks on the camps FB page. All I have to say is mean people suck. They have no idea of her sacrifice and that of countless others that goes in to helping create this camp. Social media is great, but unfortunately allows people to publicly vent without really thinking through their statements and the hurt it can cause.
