My son Parker played tackle football and never had a concussion or any other injury. Last week he was playing non contact flag football and got not one but two concussions. On Friday a student at his school was being flirty and knocked his head into another students head trying to be funny. Unfortunately it wasnt funny and caused a third concussion in less than three days. Parker is now out of school on cognitive rest for at least 7-10 days. No homework, no tests, no TV, no computer, no reading...nothing. He has earplugs in and we have red shift glasses on the way via FEDEX. He will undergo a CAT SCAN at 11AM today in San Clemente to rule out bleeding (Fingers crossed as he still has a constant headache and that isnt a good sign four days after the last impact.) I originally started out my quest to learn more about concussions particularly in youth athletes in tackle football for my son Troy but my mission now has changed. I am absolutely Hell bent on figuring out a way to decrease impacts for non helmeted sports where linear and rotational impacts are a problem. That includes but is not limited to soccer, lacrosse, rugby, flag football, baseball, softball, basketball and more. We must do a better job at protecting youth athletes and that mission starts now.
