My son is on the autism spectrum and just had surgery today. I - TopicsExpress

My son is on the autism spectrum and just had surgery today. I took some information with me about the MTHFR issue esp relating to autism and difficulties with anesthesia. The anesthesiologist was polite but looked amused as I tried to tell him about my concerns. My son was held two hours longer than anticipated and was hungry and worked into a meltdown so they gave him Versed to calm him down. He did have nitrous oxide prior to his anesthesia. When he woke he was violent and screaming that he was in pain. The staff insisted there was no way he was in pain. He also got Phentergen for nausea and a whole list of other medications. I know that they needed to give him these to sedate him...I just feel bad that they are in his system. He was so agitated and could not properly wake that they gave him Ativan which allowed him to sleep for a few more hours. Upon waking he was pleasant and hungry. When the pain set back in they gave him Tylenol with Codeine and we saw an instant transformation--screaming, violent, unable to be calmed and lost his appetite. They sent us home with a script for Tylenol with codeine but we did not fill it. I am currently making him comfortable and giving him Motrin. I am worried about what to do with all of these chemicals in his system right now. Should I list him as having an allergy to Codeine in the future? What can I give him to detox him?
