My son washed his own hair for the very first time Sunday night. - TopicsExpress

My son washed his own hair for the very first time Sunday night. And I cried with joy and pride. Im not sure that he got all of the soap out, nor do I care. He decided, on his own, that he wanted to try. He washes his body and usually I come in and wash his hair. Sunday he yelled for me to get him a dry rag. I heard the panic in his voice, but couldnt see an issue. I asked what was wrong as I got a new wash cloth out of the cabinet. He told me he washed his hair and could feel the shampoo on his face and was afraid it would get in his ears. My child, who is terrified of getting water on his face or in his ears, was brave enough to wash his own hair. He wanted to help his momma. Its a really big deal. I took the little things for granted with my other 5 children. They were all able to wash their own hair and tie their own shoes (he still cant tie his shoes, but hell get there) by the age of 5. They could hold a fork, spoon, or pencil the correct way. They could clean themselves after using the toilet without my assistance. They could brush their own hair. My son is almost 9 and still struggles with those things. I know that he will get there, in his own time, but I no longer take those things for granted. It sucks to watch him struggle, but the excitement at seeing him accomplish the things he struggles with is indescribable. Hes taught me to slow down and to celebrate and cherish the things that are usually considered no big deal. Sunday night, if you had walked in my house you would have thought he had climbed Mount Everest by the way I was celebrating, because in a way, he did. He washed his hair.
