My speech from my dads funeral yesterday guys, i wrote it for you lot....so if any of you didnt make it, here it is... I’d like to start by thanking everyone who has supported my mum and dad through the last 6 years. We all appreciate your help more than you all realise. So… I wanted to write a speech to do my Dad justice but I soon realised I could go on forever. So here is the extremely condensed version of some of the reasons I’m proud to be this man’s son! 6 years ago my dad became ill and since then he has had multiple operations, lots of other treatments, many illnesses and chemotherapy … unfortunately for those that knew this brave man, his fight has come to an end. He is a man who for 13 years of his life, fought for his country as a royal marine commando. A man who was funny, selfless, strong minded, brave, loving and caring right up until his final hour even though he was more poorly than anyone I have ever known. I would like to give a few examples of these traits by telling a few short stories from his life… In regards to being strong minded. My dad was a man with a relentless work ethic, he refused to stop working right up until 7 weeks ago when he physically couldnt do any more. He was determined not to let the cancer, myasthenia and many other troubles over the past 6 years beat him. This is testament to how strong of mind he was… his surgeon didn’t understand how he managed to be so strong even leaving a comment on his medical notes 5 years ago saying “Mr Sharpe should be dead and we don’t know why he isn’t”. He refused to stop earning his own money, even though he could have stayed at home and claimed benefits. He woke up each morning and got on with his life and never complained about his illnesses. I have found a quote by my dad’s favourite author John Grisham that describes my dad’s attitude perfectly… “You live your life today, not tomorrow and certainly not yesterday” Secondly I’d like to talk about his bravery, this is one story that sticks out in my mind that demonstrates the extreme bravery and selflessness he had…. My dad was driving through Wibsey when he saw an armed man running from a bank, he instantly jumped from the car and gave chase leaving the car still running on the roundabout. Unfortunately my dad didn’t catch the man. When he got home and recalled the story to my mum she gave him a telling off for leaving her car running on the roundabout. This leads me on to his love for my mum… My dad was a thoughtful and loving man, this was demonstrated by the fact he would always tell her he loved her, always calling her sweetheart and always finding original ways to show his affection for her. He would sneak off like a ninja to buy her secret gifts while they were shopping to surprise her. He would help her with her daily tasks, and when he came home from work, his first question would be, “where’s your mum?” He loved her more than this speech can explain. His friends and family will know him as a loud, and funny gentleman who had the ability to be brash and blunt when the time was needed. 2 of my favourite quotes of his were… He would shout into an empty pint glass “all gone” And he would show his scouse side and “borrow” things, calling them “gizzits” In his final weeks he had a sudden clarity about life telling us exactly what was important and what wasn’t. The only thing that seemed important to him at the end were his friends and family. While writing this speech I realised that all the small things have become the big things. He will be missed my many people I would just like to finish with you 2 quotes about my dad since last Monday: David Cosgrove (my dad’s apprentice mechanic) : A true legend helped me to be where I am today. Without the fear of been smacked round the head for doing the job wrong I wouldnt be the person I am. I’m proud to have been a part of his life. And one from my Friend Daniel: this countrys loss of a truly honourable gentleman. Stephen Sharpe... My Dad, my best man, my role model and my hero, Goodnight and god bless to the bravest man I have ever met. Love you Dad
