My take - I do not agree or disagree with any of the views below. These are mostly conjectures, conclusions, hypothesis, regression of the past, prediction of the future - whatever or however you term it. Current situation - 1. Yes women in India are not safe. 2. Every day we see our parents, partners and friends sick with worry, if we somehow miss their calls or even if we are just 15 minutes late. What we cant change - 1. The people who doesnt have any morale and can stoop as low as to raping someone. 2. Our law that puts an offender on bail. 3. Our law that takes ages to convict a rapist. 4. System to change. What we are trying to do - We are trying to depend on law, politicians, stars with powers to stand for us, to fast track the law and to condemn the guilty. What they cant do - Even if they stand by us, they cant prevent such unfortunate events. The thought that, the threat of law would prevent offenders is far fetched in a country, where it takes years to gain justice. Life imprisonment for murder has not stopped murders. What we should do - If we cant change the system, lets be a bit more careful. 1. Carry pepper spray 2. Learn a self defence technique 3. If we are returning late, lets make sure there is someone responsible to drop us home. 4. We can carry a change of dress, if we are coming back from a party. I am not saying that a fully covered dress would stop the act. But, may be our little effort to stop attracting unwanted attention. At least we wont have a dress to blame ! 5. We can call ahead at home and let our parents/partners know how we are travelling and with whom. 6. Carry a portable charger, so that we do not end up with a dead phone. 7. Have some emergency numbers handy. Once again, I am not saying, doing these would make a rapist a human being, all I am saying is lets protect ourselves. What others would do is not in our hands, but what we will do is definitely our choice. Stay safe.
