My thank you of the week goes out to Matthew McConaughey. Thank you, Matthew. Thank you for completely shifting the direction of your career with your recent roles, specifically in True Detective and in Dallas Buyers Club. Before I saw both of these, I must admit that I categorized Matt as one of these safe actors. For example, the Brad Pitts and the George Clooneys are apart of a group of actors who, although are talented, tend to play very safe roles, and weve come to expect them to play their roles the way that the always do. Pitt brings along many of the same mannerisms from role to role. This is the group that I categorized Matt in. Hes pretty good for what he does, but what he does was never anything special. Im very happy to admit that I was wrong in assuming that Matt would never break free from this pattern and play roles that were not only unsafe, but absolutely bursting with life. Matt has transformed into a great actor in the past few years. Before, I really had no opinion on the guy. He was alright at best. I cant say that anymore. His work lately cant be overlooked. Im genuinely excited to see where he goes from here and what roles he chooses and whether or not he will create even more intriguing characters. Breaking Bad gets a lot of credit lately, as it should, but while we were all catching up on Breaking Bad just before the final season, (okay, the 7 of you that didnt are surely going to let me know, but you have to admit that most people hopped aboard late in the game. Guilty. Thats netflix) all of us watched, or at the very least heard about, True Detective. Because the acting, story, and intensity of it cant be denied. Part of that is because Matt made himself unrecognizable. He wasnt Matthew McConaughey playing a hillbilly, he was actually a pretty trashy, insane guy. Incredible. Wherever your career takes you from here, these wonderful roles will be apart of history, and at the very least, for just a brief moment, you were a pretty damn good actor, and we thank you for it, Matt.
