My therapist looked at me like I was crazy when I told her I had - TopicsExpress

My therapist looked at me like I was crazy when I told her I had posted my Bipolar diagnosis on facebook. I didnt see anything wrong with this, I mean, I have watched and followed many of my friends through their battles with breast cancer, leukemia, and a myriad of injuries, etc. I have rooted for them, supported them, cried with them, prayed for them, and cheered for them in their remission and healing. Now I realize why she looked at me that way. Its not the same for Bipolar... instead of support there is this ENORMOUS STIGMA for mental illness. Either I get unfriended and people duck for cover down the grocery store aisle, OR, I get totally invalidated by people who think this disorder isnt real, and that I should just pull up my big girl panties and get back to life. Well, Im tired of avoiding facebook just because some people dont want to hear it and others dont want to believe it. This is who I am. To those very, very few of you who have treated me EXACTLY THE SAME as you always did, I just want to say THANK YOU! This is who Ive always been, we just know the name of it now. And BTW, you can say it ~ you can say the word Bipolar around me, you can ask me about it, talk about it if you want to.... it doesnt have to be an elephant in the room. Its all just part of my Big Top Three-ring Circus!!!
