My thought for the day on The Singing Voice - The What, The Why - TopicsExpress

My thought for the day on The Singing Voice - The What, The Why and The Two Ways. A voice can be powerful but it is from the power of words and lyrics and the way in which they are communicated to us which give the listener their treat and the voice its power. The voice can be trained to be a brilliant tool - strengthened by many technical qualities be that of riff, vibrato, belt, pitch, increased range Etc. But even with just a basic set up of a handful (if that) of these technical vocal qualities and techniques - it equates to very little regarding the communication in the intent of words and lyrics. Vocal qualities and techniques can aid the singer, giving an insight into the use of their instrument, their capabilities and capacity as a singer as well as a help to add colour and tone to notes etc. But if made the sole point of focus - it can go as far as to damage, diminish, over power and out way the true reason and necessity of the gift that is the voice. And that is intent. What it is we sing, why we sing, and the way in which we do so. What. Why. And the Way. The are two ways in which we can sing. By way of technique, and by way of intent. It is a combination of these two ways - and it is finding this healthy balance between the two. Some very capable singers can be technically brilliant but it means nothing without communicating a truth and intent. This type of singer must develop their way of intent. We all must. Regardless of our technical attributes. But the power and connection to people will always communicate ten times stronger than those who are just technically wonderful. The problem is, we are conditioned so much nowadays to develop our voice in such a way - the intent of a song is given little if any focus. I would say - pay little, if any attention to the way (technically speaking) in which to convey a message. Not to say that a technical vocal knowledge isnt helpful. It is. It helps give an internal vocal awareness as well as improving the instrument of the voice. But to solely focus on the technical way in which to communicate through song is forced and preconceived. This technical use of way is for practice not for show. Much more attention should be paid to the question - Why you are singing, what you are singing and the way (by means of intent). This form of way comes from a complete commitment to the why. If one focuses on the intent and reason of what the message is, the way will come to you. You do not have to preconceive the idea of the way in which to deliver the words. It happens as a natural evolution almost the very moment you commit yourself whole heartedly to the question - why? Seek that moment. Live and be live in that moment and the voice (technically speaking) will do what it has to do naturally with no fixation on the technical outcome. This moment breathes life into words and lyrics and it is our duty as the singer to do exactly this.
