My thoughts and observations on coach Mike Riley (and a lil on Bo) - TopicsExpress

My thoughts and observations on coach Mike Riley (and a lil on Bo) … Initially, very much a head scratcher. So let the reading (googling) begin. Although kind of concerning when you have to google your new head coach. First and foremost, appears to be top quality human being. Faith based, family oriented and a man of integrity. Very well regarded where he is from. Embodies the values and characteristics that our beloved Husker program has been built on and is known for (i.e. Tom Osborne). Riley appears to be the anti-Bo Pelini, in personality. Pelini wasn’t the worst, but his sideline demeanor was an embarrassment at times. Certainly, off the field Pelini is an excellent guy. Riley is excellent both on and off the field. Obviously Riley does not have an impeccable win-loss record but those who are trying to compare against Bo need a lesson in context. Please educate yourself before jumping to conclusions. Read up on the guy and his program. Not perfect but done the right way. Analogy … At OSU, Riley has been racing a clean but limited stock Honda Civic against Porsches, BMWs and suped-up Mustangs (Oregon, USC & UCLA). Pelini, Solich, Callahan had the keys to a championship Ferarri and well … NFL head coaching experience, NFL staff, Pro-style offense = recruiting advantage. He is very well regarded as a recruiter. Read up on this. Although you doubters will say, ahem ... Bill Callahan, I know. I guess well see. He has plenty of big game wins with his limited resources. He ended USCs 27 game Pac-10 win streak in 2006. Riley beat Wisconsin the year they embarrassed us 70-31, so there’s that. I love and support Bo but this sort of sums it up: Bo went 26-25 against opponents that finished with winning records. 40-2 against .500 or worse. The 15-year drought of conference championships at Nebraska and frequenlty losing to the good teams is not acceptable is it? Not saying Riley is the answer or is an updgrade, but change is needed. This change looks positive in many ways. He has done well with limited resources. Now he has unlimited resources. Let’s embrace and give him a chance. I choose to be optimistic. Welcome coach Riley and Go Big Red!!
