My thoughts and prayers go out to all those in the SE affected the ice. Reading through posts on snowedoutatlanta fb page gives insight into the fact that its not just inability to commute, but also many peoples health and lives are at stake. As a physician who drives around hospitals on call, I worry about the hospitalized patients waiting for an on-call doctor to arrive for an urgent/emergent procedure (surgeons, cardiologists, GI, etc), who ultimately cant get there due to the gridlock. From what Ive seen/heard Atlanta is a city where docs tend to commute around town quite a bit on call.
