My thoughts on the watermark debate: The watermark is used for - TopicsExpress

My thoughts on the watermark debate: The watermark is used for duel purposes. The first is to identify the artist and the second, to dissuade against copyright infringement. When it comes to a print, never use a watermark! It only distracts from the picture viewing experience and looks amateurish. Your photograph is copywriten from the moment you press the shutter button. I am also against the use of a watermark on your professional website. You as the artist are already known (the viewer is ON your website!) they know its you so long as your homepage is well done. If someone were intent on stealing your photograph, after a little photoshopping, your watermark is gone. Now on social media where your identity as the artist is not as clear, a watermark can be useful to gain exposure; think repost on Tumbler. The moral of the story is your image is never safe on the Internet, always be cautious. Watermarks can serve to identify you as the artist but they also interfere with the viewing experience. They provide no real copyright protection but can serve as a deterrent.
