My thoughts on this 9/11. 9/11/2001 is a date that will not - TopicsExpress

My thoughts on this 9/11. 9/11/2001 is a date that will not soon fade from my memory. The nature of my life was seriously affected that day. A small band of terrorists caused the loss of around 3,000 lives and nothing would ever be the same. I now have to subject myself to invasive and embarrassing searches to ride an airplane from one place to another. I need to provide special identification to renew my driver’s license to get a little gold star that let’s me in certain places and through certain check points that did not exist before that date. I watch as local police departments are supplied with military weaponry and vehicles and our nation fights wars in foreign lands all in respect to the “War on Terror.” I get to see my friends and acquaintances actively insult a billion person strong religion for the actions of a tiny minority as they call their behavior patriotism. I get to have my government’s intelligence agencies spy on me and all the American citizens in the name of protecting us from terrorism. I get to live under a “Patriot Act” that strips American citizens of their rights in the name of the “War on Terrorism.” When I think about the desire of the “terrorist” Islamic faction to destroy the American way of life and I then look at what the American right wing and our government have done, I cannot help but conclude that the terrorist’s best ally is America itself as we all willingly give up the very freedoms that we use to define ourselves in a search for some sense of safety that does not exist. As Ben Franklin said, “Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”
