My top movies of 2014. What makes my top list? Films i love. Films i like and i know i will appreciate more with time. Films that impress me visually, emotionally, technically, linguistically. Films with amazing performances. Films that make me think. Films that teach me something. Films that entertain the hell out of me. Films that change the game and up-the-ante. Here we go. 20. The Grand Budapest Hotel- Wes Anderson A great cast. A whopping amount of stylish visuals. A murder. A resort. A great Laugh. Deceptively thoughtful. 19. The Fault in Our Stars- Josh Boone Terminally ill children. A sweeping love story. This is a five hanky weepathon that is worth every damn minute. Wonderful young cast. A true life ruiner. 18. Two Days, One Night- Jean-Pierre Dardenne A rather simple film that deals with the nature of compassion towards your community. Marion Cotillard delivers yet another Oscar worthy performance. Its quite brilliant. 17. Gone Girl- David Fincher Improves upon viewing. My initial thought on Gone Girl is rather different from how i feel about it now. Mr. Fincher creates an atmospheric piece that lingers quite eloquently with age old questions about truth, love and asks very poignantly do you ever really know the people that you share your lives with? Gone Girl is a great psychoanalysis piece that will continue to blossom with age. 16. Ida- Pawel Pawlikowski A weighty history of the world drama about a young nun discovering the secrets of her own past. Ida is a beautifully shot film that deals with one of historys most horrific and poignant moments in time. Its impeccably human and astoundingly personal. 15. The Maze Runner- Wes Ball Thomas wakes to find himself surrounded by a group of boys with no recollection of who he is or where he comes from. Enter a Maze, Giant killer mechanical spider alien thingys, tense beat the clock pacing and a talented young cast. Boom. A new y.a. sci-fi franchise is born. A very entertaining and well made film. 14. Captain America: The Winter Soldier- Anthony Russo, Joe Russo Winter Soldier is so far the best outing Marvel has had with one of their marquee hero franchises. It steps up the game substantially for all other solo hero projects to come. The film is well written, excellently produced without being overly bombastic and it keeps true to The Captain America legacy. Well Done. Also its ridiculously BADASS!!!! 13. Guardians of The Galaxy- James Gunn This is action, sci-fi, comic, fantasy perfection. Marvel expands their universe with an exquisitely funny, fast paced comic book juggernaut that assaults the senses at every turn. This is great film-making. 12. The Lego Movie- Phil Lord, Christopher Miller The Lego Movie is awesome. It has beautiful animation, a hilarious voice over cast, gags gags gags. Its hysterical and touching and great. 11. The Babadook- Jennifer Kent Horror i am glad to say is on my list this year. It is very hard indeed to watch a horror movie and say wow that was very good. The Babadook is really good and its genuinely scary. Real scary, it plays on common fears that we all have when our psychology plays tricks on us and that shadow in the corner looks a little creepy and those noises of your house settling make you shake. This is a classic boogeyman tale and it boasts one of the most affecting and obnoxious child performances Ive ever seen on film. Little Noah Wiseman is very good and so unnerving that you feel every single moment of his mothers frustration every single time this boy opens his mouth. Mom played by Essie Davis is a revelation her performance is completely enthralling and multi-faceted and vigorous and tragic all you wanna do is give her a hug and buy her a trip to the bahamas. The Babadook is hella good. stay tuned for my top 10.
