My trio was invited to perform at a lovely senior community a few weeks ago here in Honolulu. Typically, I engage my audience members...encourage them to sing along...and with one lovely older gentleman, who seemed mildly engaged, I asked him if he would like to dance with me while the other musicians took their solos. He stood up and I took him by the arm and carefully walked him over to the dance floor where we proceeded to cut the rug to a gentle swing tune. Afterward, I escorted him back to his seat...he was beaming and sat in the palm of my hand for the rest of the performance. Later I found out that this man had lost his wife two years prior and with that he lost his joy for life as many people do. Nobody had seen him smile until this particular afternoon when someone acknowledged him and took him away to a more beautiful place where music and dancing reside. Oh...the simple power of just that.
