My uncle Norm Thurmer, his son, my cousin, Norm Thurmer and his two sons Norm and Bill Thurmer, are three generations of Ramsey County Deputies. And I have a number of friends who are cops in the cities. Over the years I have shuddered at some of things Ive heard from them, about being a cop in the cities. We hear all about it, in the media, when a cop shoots someone and the circumstances of the shooting are deemed questionable. But if we give some thought to all the shootings, the cops who put their lives on the line for us everyday, are actually involved in across this country, and all the close calls where they are able to disarm someone before any shooting occurs, it shouldnt be too difficult to realize why sometimes they might shoot first when they believe their lives are in danger. Doubtless there are some bad cops, but doubtless too is that they, the bad ones, are many in number.
