My uncle Tom died today. Earlier this year, he and my aunt Bridie lost their only son Tommy, who died aged 53, after suffering for most of his life. We didnt know that his father, my uncle, was actually seriously ill himself, but he held on to make sure that someone was there for his wife when they lost their son. When my mum died in 1998, my uncle Tom, her brother, by then a born again Catholic, administered the last rites. We were too shocked to even think about objecting (being an atheist family) and Im very glad and proud that we allowed him to say his goodbyes to his sister for him and their siblings. Tom was pretty much the spitting image of Danny Kaye; he was a bit of a comedian - a showman - and there probably wasnt a more decent, caring, understanding and lovely man in all the world. I havent seen him for about 10 years - he put us off from going to his sons funeral and we now believe it was so we didnt see how ill he was. He would have loved to have seen us all, but equally he would have not wanted to upset any of us - he was that kind of a man. Gonna miss you Tom. xx
