My unpopular opinion for the day: I have a love/hate relationship with the statement We should teach people not to rape. Do I agree with the statement? Yes. Is it simplistic? Yes. Teaching communication and consent is a great idea. Teaching people that it is okay to say No and to be honest how they are feeling is great idea. Teaching people about what rape and rape culture is, is a great idea. However.. There are some sociopathic predatory people who wont learn or dont care and those are the people we need to be informed about. We still need street smarts. We still need to understand the situations we are in and how predators work in order to reduce the risk of meeting them. Reducing incidences of rape and assault means not only informing people how not to rape but also giving people the knowledge on how to avoid predators. We need to address the problem from multiple angles. There are unfortunately situations that are unvoidable but hopefully having these things in place will reduce the incidences of assault happening. This does not mean if we fail to avoid predators, it is the victims fault. The predator still committed an act of voilence. They still hurt someone. My personal safety and the safety of others will always be partly my responsibility, not 100% the responsibility of everyone but me. Whether Im driving in a car or walking in public.
