My views on the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict were made public years ago in a blog I wrote What hope is there?, so I will not repeat them. I will however reiterate for the sake of clarity that to stand against Zionism does not make one antisemitic- it makes one human. What I stand against is the Zionist colonial project aimed at the continued illegal expansion of Israels territory beyond the Green Line. This illegal territorial expansion and brutal military occupation of Israel beyond its 1967 borders has led to one of the greatest humanitarian catastrophes and injustices of our time. There are children who are born in Israel who have the right to grow up with freedom, but so do the Palestinians. Freedom should be the birth right of every human being regardless of their ethnicity, race or religion. It cannot belong only to a select few who are united by an abstract nationalism which inevitable leads to the colonial domination and alienation of others who are in the minority. Supporting Freedom does not mean supporting terrorists. What we can do is speak out, not in anger or hatred, but in a one clamorous and unified voice which will eventually be heard. There are many Jewish organizations which are becoming increasingly active in the fight for the human rights of the Palestinian people. These are the Jews who believe that there should be an end to the illegal occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. They believe that social/ economic justice, equality and an adherence to international law, are the the only way to achieve peace in the Middle East. One thing we can do is support their voices because in the end, true change in Israel has to come from within the hearts and minds of its own people...when its people realize that what they are doing to the Palestinian people goes against everything the Jewish tradition stands for.
