My western-watching group met on Saturday night. We watched the long version (over 3 hours) of John Waynes THE ALAMO. He functioned as director, star, and producer, nearly bankrupting himself, smoking five packs of cigarettes a day (and we know how THAT turned out). The big battle at the end is a model of its kind, but many of the bombastic dialogue scenes did need to be cut. This version is available only on VHS and laser disc. A few years ago, Robert Harris approached United Artist about doing a restoration, but by then the film elements were a mess.
