My wife, Cheryl Mabery, is on an amazing fitness program and looks like the day I met her. I am so proud of her efforts. I was reflecting on my own plight in the mirror this morning (its a big mirror), and thought: When did you first realize you were overweight? I started to say fat, but overweight just sounds like I have to fight Mike Tyson instead of Sugar Ray Leonard, and Id prefer the latter because he doesnt bite your ears off, which is a good reason to lose weight in itself. I like to hear music, and with Iron Mike gnawing on them, the sound is a bit muffled. So I thought about it, and realized the first time I said to myself, #@%&*, I HAVE to lose some serious poundage here was when I was snorkeling in the British Virgin Islands, looked down at my corpulent belly, and saw a remora (one of those sucker fish in the nature videos) locked on, looking for scraps from my next cheeseburger in paradise. THATs a fairly decent sign that its time to back away from the trough and eat something green. I used to feel like I was 10-feet tall and bulletproof, and could eat anything. And if I had time and energy to exercise like a fiend, maybe I could, but I dont. Age is a chink in the armor; a vulnerability that no one wants; an entropy that can be slowed, but not halted; an inevitability that can either be embraced with grace, or fought with thought and apathy. Yet, age brings wisdom. Age brings new opportunities--in life, and in relationships. Age brings the privilege of reaching OUT to the young as mentors. Age brings a seasoning and savor that may not be appreciated by all, but enriches the food of life. Age brings us closer to our ultimate goal-line. Aging, then, can be a celebration of newness! I hope that for myself, and for the other oldsters out there! :)
