My wife Sandra said this better than I could right now... This year for the holidays Pete and I are participating in Oakland Family Services Adopt a Family Program. Most of you know that I am a terrible Grinch and cant stand all the Christmas consumerism, but the kids in this program are in really crappy circumstances and are in need of things like coats, boots, and bedding. They arent asking for Playstations and designer sneakers. The boy that we are adopting is 16 and came into our Foster Care services a few months ago. Stevens father has never been around, and his mother has health issues and wasnt able to care for him. Up until August, he was somehow being cared for by his 18 year old brother, but the older boy joined the Army and isnt here to take care of Steven any more. Once the brother left, no one was left to take care of Steven, and he stopped going to school, which is how his situation came to DHSs attention, and led him to services at OFS. Steven now has a safe place to live and foster parents who make sure he is cared for and goes to school. He is getting intensive tutoring to help him catch up, though as a sophomore who is at a 3rd grade reading level, he has a lot of work ahead of him. I tried to imagine Will being all alone in the world, and felt compelled to make sure this other boy has warm winter clothes and the art supplies he is asking for. Im sharing this because there are other kids in similar situations still available for adoption if youd like to help.
