My yoga journal post #5 Yoga has taught me to be process oriented. Sometimes I get obsessed with goals and tasks that I need to complete in order to get where I want to go or receive what I think I need. This makes all of my actions a means by which I work toward an end. But, does that mean that this moment is empty because its not being used to work toward a goal? I dont think so. Yoga has taught me to recognize the value of process, treating an action as an end instead of a means to get somewhere else; and embracing the value of each moment as whole and complete, making small choices that lead toward an intention. I remember my journey toward graduating from college. The first to work toward a bachelors degree in my family, I thought that when I graduated all would fall into place and the universe would magically unfold somehow and grant me ultimate happiness and stability. The reality was that upon graduation, I was more miserable and lost than ever. Mostly because I raced through and trivialized the learning process and based my happiness on a future event, devaluing many of the precious moments present on my journey. I was so busy making plans I didnt take the time to be and be real with myself, to check to see if I was on the right path - in alignment with my whole self. As a yoga teacher now, many people ask for help to lose weight or work toward a physical yoga posture. If we start with an idea or picture of what the end looks like, then we dont allow for the picture to change which most likely is more aligned with who we are deep inside. And we also miss the opportunity to experience the magic inherent in the transformation process. Its better to start or set a goal as an idea or intention. Thats why we set an intention in the beginning of class rather than a goal. We focus on an idea or image that we intend to occur, yet allow the potential fruition of that idea to take shape in a natural way which in most cases is more magical than we could ever imagine. Thats what Ive experienced anyway. :) Im still learning this lesson, and I experience it as a process - forever unfolding in waves of humility and understanding.
