Myanmar and Thailand to generate electricity through solar power: It is reported that the Myanmar electric power authorities will initiate a project to generate electricity through solar power in cooperation with a Thai company in a bid to meet the growing demand of electricity in the country in addition to sources obtained through hydro, gas and coal power. The New Light of Myanmar said that “Under a memorandum of understanding signed between Myanmars Ministry of Electric Power and the Green Earth Power Company Limited of Thailand, the project of establishing a solar power plant capable of generating 50 MW of electricity will be implemented in Minbu, central Magway region.” It said that “On its completion, the power plant will go into operation by 2015 to 2016.” Moreover, arrangements are also being made by another company, the ACO Company to build another solar power plant with a generating capacity of 250 MW in Nabu aing of Mingyan district of Magway and the project is also expected to be completed by 2015 to 2016. Regionally, there are 2 existing hydropower plants in Magway Region Mone Creek and Kyiohngyiwa hydropower plants each generating 75 MW and is being distributed to national grid. There are mainly 21 hydropower stations and one coal fired one across Myanmar. According to official statistics, Myanmar generated 1,933 MW of electricity in maximum in 2013s rainy season. However, in summer, it supplied 1,688 MW against the demand of 2,060 MW. Currently, the northern part of the country mainly depends on hydropower while the souther n part on gas and coal fired power.
