N CELEBRATION Jacqueline du Pré would have been 70 today. During her career and much too short life, she touched many people with her music, and her being. People who were close to her remember a dear friend who was completely honest, natural and unpretentious. A person with a unique generosity of spirit who exuded warmth and who hated anything which smacked of falseness or superficiality. Giving all of herself in performance, her playing contained the truth as she saw and felt it, a truth drawn from a deep source of conviction. That open naturalness of her personality and the direct, unfiltered way she was able to communicate sound through her cello endeared her to everyone who came into contact with her, from fellow musicians she worked with, as well as the concert-going and record-buying public who didnt know her personally. Whatever she did, she did it directly from the heart, to the heart. Now, 70 years after her birth and almost 30 years after her death, Jacqueline du Prés artistry lives on and continues to resonate and inspire millions of people today.
