I am not black, but I have been a victim of Depo-Provera, and I am low-income. My name is A. W. I am 22, currently live in Salt Lake City, UT, and had my first injection of Depo-Provera in September, 2012, followed by one in December, 2012. My doctor told me Depo-Provera was just like birth control pills, except I only needed one shot every 3 months, he told me the side effects would be just like with birth control pills, but never specified what those side effects were(I had been on birth control pills before, they are not the same!), and when I told him I wanted to have kids and only wanted a temporary birth control method, he assured me it only lasted 3, maybe 4 months. It started off simple enough, it seemed to prevent me from getting pregnant, but I had irregular bleeding, some weight gain, and I was more tired than usual, but I didnt think too much of it, so I got my next shot. The irregular bleeding and everything else still continued after my next shot and showed no signs of getting better, eventually I learned through a google search that it can last up to 2 years according to the makers. Which was the main thing that made me decide not to get a third shot, prolonging pregnancy for 3 months is one thing, prolonging it for 2 years is something else entirely! After stopping it though, all the side effects still continued, it is now November, 2013, almost a year since my last shot, and Im still having irregular bleeding, unusual tiredness, and weight problems. Earlier this year doctors found I have an ovarian cyst, Im not sure if Depo could have caused that, but Ill mention it anyway. My new doctor suspects my irregular bleeding is due to not ovulating, which I suspect is due to the Depo shots I received, almost a year is much longer than the 3, maybe 4 months that my doctor originally told me. And I gained 65lbs from that initial shot in September! I cant say for sure it was all the fault of the shot, but I believe it did have something to do with it. Though it is early on in my case, I may go back to normal in time, I am pissed for not being disclosed the truth about this harmful drug! Im frightened I may never regain my fertility, I may develop cancer, or bone problems, as a direct result of the shots! This stuff should be illegal! Ill gladly help in any way I can to help outlaw the Depo-Provera shot!
