NABARD approves Rs 5.74 cr for Kalimpong farmers KALIMPONG, 29 Nov 2014: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) on Friday sanctioned Rs5.74 crore for agriculture resources and women empowerment. The funds are to be distributed among farmers of Blocks 1 and 2 under Kalimpong. Kalimpong Farmers’ Welfare Association secretary Bishnu Chhetri NABARD announced the funding on the second day of the ongoing Darjeeling Mandarin and Large Cardamom Festival. He said the grant will benefit 1,100 farmers and their families of villages under Block 1 and Block 2. The farmers will receive high yield cash crop saplings, fertilizers and technical support including wages for the next five years. Addressing media persons, Chhetri said farmers will receive support in the segments of apiculture, floriculture and mandarin cultivation. The amount approved by NABARD need not be repaid, hence the farmers will hugely benefit from this gesture. The farmers’ association will have to complete the scheme within seven years, informed Chhetri, adding it will start from February of next year. (EOIC)
