NANCY I first met Nancy when she was 8 years old and I was 5. Those days, we did not have Mickey Mouse nor Barbie doll, no Winnie the Pooh and no Barney dinosaur. As for superheroes, Michaelangelo and the other Ninja Turtles were not born yet, neither Ultraman nor Kungfu Panda. If I remember correctly, the first heroes who made their appearances were The Phantom and The Lone Ranger (both happened to be masked, Zorro came much later). So without much competition, Nancy easily appealed to us preteen kids. As a preteen herself, she always had her Bob hairstyle that, together with her knee-length skirt, suited her chubbiness. Nancy had a friend called Sluggo. Unlike Nancy who lived with her Aunt Fritzi and was well brought up in an upper middle class family environment, Sluggo was an orphan who lived in an abandoned house with a truck driver. He was usually seen wearing his signature cap covering his bald head, and a patched jacket. Although coming from very different backgrounds, Nancy and Sluggo seemed to get along well together. Fact that both of them loved ice creams helped. As the years rolled on, I saw less and less of Nancy and Sluggo. Unlike some people, I did not think they would be an item and got married but I did wonder what had become of them. I hope Sluggo became a truck driver or something and not a drug addict and that would be a good turn out for a kid who came from the other side of the tracks. As for Nancy, no one would bet against her going to Cambridge or Oxford and perhaps devoting herself in her free time to some community work. Alas, I was in for a great disappointment; for last I heard, she turned out to be a boot licking politician who kept a waddling overweight frog as a pet.
