WE NEED TO TAKE OUT CLIMATE DENIERS IN CONGRESS ONE BY ONE STARTING WITH MI-11 Birmingham, MI – Democratic candidate Nancy Skinner, who once ran as an opponent of President Obama in the Democratic Primary in Illinois for the US Senate, is now leading the charge to elect more “climate candidates” to Congress, starting with herself in one of the few competitive House seats in Congress due to gerrymandered districts. “I’ve been working on climate change and communicating the myriad threats we face in a world of weather extremes, water scarcity, crop shortages, sea level rise and dislocated populations for 21 years now, but the well-funded disinformation campaigns by vested oil interests were just too powerful. This winter’s record breaking severity from record cold and snow in the east and a 500-year drought in California is a pivot point. Now, Americans can see for themselves what the tiniest change in temperatures has wrought – less than 1 degree Celsius. The UN’s IPCC report issued yesterday on climate change, a very conservative scientific assessment in fact (because of the consensus-based approach they employ) should have governments around the world flocking to their war rooms, gathering the best and brightest minds to tackle what is now surely the most overwhelming and imminent threat to humanity – not some future generation, ours –right here and now, Skinner says.” Skinner has worked on climate change and sustainable development from many platforms – as an Presidential award-winning activist rebuilding flooded towns as models of environmental sustainability, to a national and TV personality (to combat the climate-denying rhetoric of Rush Limbaugh and his clones dominating talk radio), and as a candidate for federal office, both times running on the issue of climate change, including in her hometown in the seat of the auto industry MI-09 where she nearly upset a 14 yr. incumbent Republican. MI-11 is roughly half the old MI-09, giving Skinner name ID and a solid base. This time the Republican incumbent, Kerry Bentivalio, often called the “accidental candidate” because he was elected only after a 12 yr.-incumbent Congressmen Thaddeus McCotter failed to submit the required signatures and resigned early, was listed by Roll Call as one of “Top Ten Most Vulnerable”. Bentivalio is a Tea Party candidate, a former reindeer farmer and Santa impersonator, tows the Tea Party line that climate change is a global conspiracy and a hoax. Skinner entered the race, announcing her run and basing it on both the urgent need and economic opportunity to address climate change on her website skinnerforcongress. She is setting up other websites, one is climatecandidates to recruit more House and Senate candidates willing to act on climate change and another AmericansforKochBrothersProsperity – a satirical effort to raise funds to fend off attacks from the Koch brothers, whose PAC Americans for Prosperity, spends millions attacking Democrats in an effort to stop action on climate change. “I know I will need all the help I can get from Americans who understand the climate change threat now and want to break the influence of the Koch brothers on stopping any action.
