NAPLAN has been attracting plenty of criticism in the media lately and for good reason - the IEU is no friend of the current testing regime. For instance, just yesterday we published a piece from the IEUA about the need for an expert review of the test. (ieu.asn.au/news-publications/news/2014/08/expert-review-of-naplan-needed/) IEU Federal Secretary Chris Watt said that it was Of considerable concern, that IEU member responses showed that fewer believe the NAPLAN test results are a useful diagnostic tool compared to 2010; only around one third said that the test results had been useful compared to almost one half three years earlier. And in todays Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), which runs NAPLAN, said they would overhaul the writing task which has been slammed and criticised by educators and media commentators alike. (smh.au/nsw/naplan-writing-task-to-be-overhauled-after-widespread-criticism-20140818-105e6i.html#ixzz3AnDqVwda) Writing in the Canberra Times today, Robyn Cox, who is president of the Primary English Teaching Association of Australia, wondered if we could as a nation ...celebrate our literacy successes, like the rest of the world does, rather than focus on a bad question in a test that teaches us nothing about how to write?
