NAPS FOOTBALL OPENS WITH A WIN OVER LACKAWANNA NAPS’ quarterback Travis Marshall of Alpharetta, GA connected with running back John Brown of Durham, NC for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds remaining in the game to give NAPS a 31-28 victory over Lackawanna College on Saturday in Peckville, PA. The Falcons of Lackawanna had come back from a two-touchdown deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter. NAPS got off to a strong start and was ahead 12-0 after the first quarter, but Lackawanna scored on a 15-yard run early in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 12-7. NAPS answered with another score on a running play by Marshall, but Lackawanna responded with a 5-yard touchdown pass. NAPS running back Darryl Bonner from Fayetteville, NC scored his second touchdown run of the first half for Navy Prep with a 12-yard run giving Navy Prep a 25-13 at halftime lead. A pair of Lackawanna touchdowns in the 3rd quarter put Lackawanna in front by a score of 26 to 25. In the 4th quarter Lackawanna pinned the NAPS offense down inside the 5 yard line, and then forced a safety making the score 28 – 25 in favor of the Falcons with 9 minutes left to play. The NAPS defense had to step up and force a stop, and they responded forcing the Falcons to punt. However, the punt was downed at the NAPS 6 yard line with only 6 minutes left in the game. The NAPS offense gained only 8 yards on the first three downs leaving them with a 4th and 2 when Marshall hit Brown for a 44 yard gain into Falcon territory and a crucial first down. From there NAPS continued to move the ball and capped the 94 yard, 10 play drive with a touchdown strike from Marshall to Brown with 37 seconds left on the clock to give NAPS a 31 – 28 lead which NAPS held until the final gun. Jerry Thompson, Memphis, TN; Sean Spencer, Sharpsburg, GA; Brandon Jones, Keller, TX; and David Smith, Newport News, VA all played well for the NAPS defense. It was not the prettiest of wins, but NAPS is 1 – 0 going into a very difficult game against the nation’s 13th ranked junior college team, Nassau Community College, this weekend. You can come watch the future NCAA football stars face off this weekend on Nimitz Field at 4:00 pm.
