NASA has programs that encourage public participation. One program is the HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGING SCIENCE EXPERIMENT (HiRISE). This program allow the public to select targets on the surface of Mars to be imaged by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). The visible light camera on the orbiter is attached to a 0.5 meter, f/24 telescope which allow for resolution of objects as small as 8 ft. in diameter from a orbital position that varies from 125 mills to 250 miles above the Martian surface. In January 2010, I submitted a request to image an area in the South Ganges Chasma. I received notice this past week that an image of the site I had requested was acquired on Sept. 30, 2014. Im not going to bore you with the scientific justification to image this site, but as you can imagine, I was Happy as a pig in mud when I got notification the my site had been imaged. The high resolution image covered an area ~21 km long and ~3 km wide. Ive attached three cropped sections of that image.
