NASSAU, Bahamas -- On Tuesday, August 26, the U.S. Embassy celebrated the first year anniversary of the American Corner in Nassau which is located at the Harry C. Moore Library at The College of The Bahamas. American Corner Nassau serves as an information outpost similar to a public library that makes resources about the United States available to foreign publics at large. Since August 2013, the Corner has hosted 35 programs and engaged more than 1500 people. U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Lisa Johnson and Acting President of The College of The Bahamas Dr. Carey-Baines were on hand for the celebration and both gave remarks promoting the friendship and partnership between the United States and The Bahamas. Chargé Johnson emphasized her hope to increase the number of visitors to the Corner and form more partnerships to develop new programs. Acting President Carey-Baines expressed her gratitude for the collaboration between the U.S. Embassy and The College of The Bahamas in establishing the American Corner, and mentioned her aspiration to double the amount of programs offered in the coming year. American Corner Nassau, the first in The Bahamas, is a partnership between the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section and the College of The Bahamas established one year ago. It provides access to current and reliable information about the United States via book collections, the Internet, and through local programming to the general public. It is also a place for cultural lectures, discussion forums and informational sessions. The Corner aims to maintain an open dialogue on issues of mutual concern and build bridges of understanding between Americans and Bahamians. Programs over the last year have covered a broad array of topics including youth empowerment, gender-based violence, education in the United States, strategic planning for civil society, and citizen security.
