NATIONAL DAY e-MESSAGE 2014 from Fabian Picardo, Leader of the GSLP It has been a privilege to lead your new government over the past 1000 days and see so many of our election promises delivered. There is still a long way to go before anyone can judge our success but already it is clear that the landscape of Gibraltar and our society has changed for the better. Already people feel free to speak their minds without fear of retribution. Already they can actively contribute to our governance through their participation in public debates on planning etc. Commonwealth Park is real, helping us live and breathe in our hectic life styles. Providing invaluable quality time for our families. Our youth have at last the vision of their new homes being delivered; old dilapidated and forgotten estates are being improved by the addition of lifts and a much-needed modernisation programme is underway, cladding buildings and extending their useable life considerably. New schools, our own Bank and funding for our own University, all impossible dreams before under the GSD, are now rapidly becoming reality for future generations. In fact, the last three together AND Commonwealth Park all cost LESS than the Airport Terminal! The fact is that our important projects are now beginning to shine. All this of course whilst we legislate to confirm to all who may doubt that we are model Europeans and to fend off the promised onslaught delivered on us by the blinkered and shortsighted PP policies. In fairness they did promise to do this long before they even got into power and it is exactly the same thing they did to the GSD and Mr Caruana between 1997 and 2003; but somehow I don’t think they expected the resolute and powerful defence of our corner that your GSLP/Liberal Government is working tirelessly to deliver around the world and even in the Spanish media itself when necessary. All this of course also whilst we had to rescue the Eastside reclamation project and recast the madness proposed by the GSD as a new diesel powered generating station after so many years of complete abandon in our electrical services. No easy task I assure you. Our personal commitment and determination to deliver everything we promised to you is even stronger now then when we took office. Your incredible support is our guarantee of success. The packed Mackintosh Hall in our meetings, your constant encouragement in the streets is the fuel we need to continue in our joint quest. I have no doubt that together we shall enjoy the remaining 500 days with the same zeal, determination and feeling of achievement. I felt it was important however to thank you for your support and to assure you that this is the best driver for our policies. Without you, none of this is possible. Because everything we do is designed to continue the process of building and strengthening our nation. Everything that adds opportunities for education, development of infrastructure etc adds to that huge job of strengthening and securing Gibraltar’s future. And that is where the GSLP invests, in the long term strength our nation. Look out for that logic in everything we do. At the end of our term, the community we are so proud to serve shall judge us. I am sure that our principles and policies will be rewarded with renewed support, forging the way forward for the new vibrant and free Gibraltar we so want for the new generations of this country of ours. So enjoy your National Day 2014 and celebrate forming part of creating this great Red and White Nation nation of ours.
